Goodwill TalentBridge is recruiting for someone with a passion for helping Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in the community of Waukesha.
The Educational Interpreter provides interpreting and/or transliterating services for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the educational environment. This environment may include classrooms, field trips, assemblies, counseling sessions, club meetings, extracurricular activities, IEP meetings, and other educational activities.
The Educational Interpreter facilitates communication and provides access to the educational environment through the use of sign language, spoken English, as well as their knowledge about visual accessibility. The Educational Interpreter’s role is not to perform duties as a licensed teacher or to replace a teacher.
DUTIES
The Educational Interpreter’s duties are not only specific to the student assigned, but they also serve as a member of the educational team of that student.
- Interpret oral communication into sign language and signed communication into spoken English.
- Convey the content of the message clearly and accurately according to the receptive language level of the student and the preferred modality of the student.
- Report student related concerns to the appropriate educational personnel.
- Work collaboratively with the student's educational team.
- Develop, modify, or adapt instruction and materials with guidance and collaboration with classroom teachers and educational team members.
- Prepare for interpreting assignments including the vocabulary and content knowledge of the subject matter.
- Tutor students and make adaptations with guidance and collaboration with classroom teachers and educational team members.
- Assist in communication throughout the school day in a variety of settings (recess, lunch, peer interactions, emergency drills) as stated in the IEP.
- Assist the teacher in behavior management and classroom maintenance activities.
- Assist in the supervision of students on the bus to and from school, when needed, and on field trips.
- Physically assist with students including lifting as needed.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned by school district administration. Ability to maintain confidentiality relating to students, families and staff.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
- Specialized skills and training in the area of American Sign Language, Transliteration/PSE, as well as a proficient level of English grammar knowledge and use.
- Must be eligible for or possess a valid DPI #020 Educational Interpreter License.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral, written and sign language form.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, walk and hear.
- The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Employee may frequently be required to bend, twist, sit on the floor or crouch.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- This job is performed in a school setting both indoors (classrooms/cafeteria/hallways) and outdoors (playground).
